Don't know if this is the place to ask this - but do you know if it's possible to disable the continual HRV readings on an Apple Watch and ONLY trigger a reading manually through the Breathe app?

hello Cara, thank you for your message. I believe it is not possible to do so, unfortunately.

Thanks for the guidance Marco! At the moment I’m focusing on recovering from post viral fatigue / long COVID. When I wake up in the morning, often I’ll meditate or do a guided yoga nidra script in bed before I get up for the day. Sometimes I fall asleep again. Would you be measuring post yoga nidra? Or before?

thank you Ross, wishing you a prompt recovery

Ideally I’d measure before, but it’s also fine to measure when you eventually get up for the day

Oh thank goodness for this guidance, after bathroom and seated is just so much less disruptive than trying to take the “just after waking, before getting out of bed” guidance literally. 😄 I also think the case you make for a seated measurement being more useful is quite compelling. I will be curious to see how much my measurements differ.

thank you Michelle!

Thanks Marco, is it ok if your feet don’t touch the floor when you are measuring? Sitting on a bed. Thanks

thanks Jodi, yes!

HI Marco,

I often have trouble sleeping so I get up and read for awhile, then go back to bed. Sometimes I'm back to sleep for less than an hour before getting up for the day. Do you think the HRV morning protocol will work for me in those instances?

Marco Altini's avatar

hey Mary, yes, in this case I’d measure when you eventually decide to get up for the day.

Hello! My procedure in the morning is like this:

Waking up

Going downstairs to bathroom

Measuring HRV

Is going down the stairs a problem?

Thank you very much!

thanks Robert! all good here, I would simply wait a few seconds before measuring, but there is no problem in changing the room or going downstairs. All the best

Hi Marco, I'm trying to ingrain a morning routine I'll be likely to stick with for the long haul. In the spirit of "every minute counts," would there be any problem taking the measurement while sitting on the toilet (after relaxed urination but before trying to force a bowel movement)? Any need to wait a bit after urinating before taking the measurement?

hey Jon, this should be okay. Normally I think we'd like to change room, lie down, and after a few seconds sit and measure, but if that's not practical, a seated measurement after emptying the bladder is still better than measuring while lying down or while asleep, in my opinion.
