Congrats for this great personal achievment! I have the same approach in cycling, improving and stay healthy. If I understand well, the four sessions described every month are the ones where you do intensities? All others sessions are zone 1? Do you practice some intensities when you cycle?
It’s not so easy to do only one session per week with some intensity. I’m not prone to do frequently group rides but in that case, impossible to do a structured workout and only one session of intensity per week!
indeed! Last summer I was also doing 1 hard workout per week on the bike, but I was running a bit less due to an injury. Recently with the higher running load I haven't been able to do the intensity on the bike, more of a mental limitation than physical I think (I don't have the motivation or mental energy to go out hard more often, at least at the moment). I would be good to do it though I think, for performance, as it doesn't really leave any impact due to the different nature of the sport.
hello Ilya, I think the body goes into some sort of "energy saving mode", assuming there is limited availability of food, therefore reducing heart rate. This has been shown quite consistently in research (for example: https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/22510429/), even though the mechanisms might not be that clear.
A great day for you in my humble opinion. Your report is a lot to digest for me so I will need to go back and re-read it a few times. Smile. I ran Boston in 2022 and decided to not race it but to enjoy the experience, the fans, the crowds and I wanted to finish. Getting into Boston was a long process for me and I was not too sure I wanted to try again to qualify.
If you look at the pacing trends for all the finishers (the splits), many runners start out fast (because it is mostly downhill for several miles) and then they fade when they hit the Newton hills. Keep that in mind if you need to be patient with your calves.
The best moment was when I turned left to finish running down Boylston Street - I soaked in the crowds, the noise, your goose bumps. And then with about 1/4 of a mile to go, I hear the announcer saying my name and my hometown. Wow.

What could be a plausible link between being in a calorie deficit and lower heart rate?

thank you Jenn! I’m thinking to do the same at the moment, going out a bit conservative and have a nice experience. Let’s see
